Management Committee
Karen Neilson

I am seeking the opportunity to contribute to the QASEL Management Committee, bringing extensive experience in special education leadership, a strong commitment to QASEL, and a deep understanding of the diverse contexts in which special education leaders work across Queensland.
For the past three years, I have served as a QASEL Regional Councillor, providing me with a strong understanding of the organisation, its members and the opportunities and challenges facing special education leaders across the state. I have a genuine passion for connecting with people, building relationships and creating spaces where emerging leaders feel valued, supported and confident to grow. Facilitating QASEL’s inaugural Emerging Leaders Breakfast Club was particularly meaningful to me because it brought together my passion for relational leadership and my commitment to developing the next generation of special education leaders. I believe leadership is fundamentally about people — listening, encouraging, sharing experience, creating connections and, importantly, believing in the potential of others. Creating opportunities for emerging leaders to connect, learn from one another and find their leadership voice is something I am deeply committed to and would be proud to continue through QASEL.
My leadership experience extends from school-based leadership to a statewide level. As the former Statewide Manager, Vision Impairment – State Schools, I led the Statewide Vision Impairment Service and worked extensively with regional leadership teams and primary, secondary and special schools across Queensland. This role provided me with an invaluable understanding of the diversity of regional contexts, workforce capability, service provision and the challenges experienced by students, families and educators across the state. I provided expert advice to senior departmental leaders and developed regional workforce capability initiatives to strengthen inclusive educational provision.
I currently bring this statewide perspective together with school leadership experience as a Principal in a special school context. My leadership is grounded in strategic planning, evidence-informed improvement, instructional leadership, developing leadership capability and building strong partnerships. I am particularly passionate about creating opportunities for emerging leaders and building the collective capability of the special education profession.
I would bring to the Management Committee a collaborative, strategic and authentic leadership approach. I am committed to advocating for equity and positive change, building purposeful connections across the profession, and creating opportunities for collective learning and capability development. These principles strongly reflect QASEL’s values of Leading, Linking and Learning.
I believe my combination of QASEL experience, statewide knowledge, specialist expertise and contemporary special education leadership would enable me to make a meaningful contribution to the strategic direction of QASEL and to advocate strongly for leaders and students across Queensland.
